Producing tools to support the artistic inner you.
Honoring the heritage of Union Mfg Co by making tools that are as exacting in standard as you are. When precision counts and only the best will do Union will be there beside you all the way. A company born out of the study of yesteryear tools that have made artisans just like you a living for decades.
At Union Manufacturing Company our mission is to make tools the same way they were originally made in the New Britain, CT Plant. Our love for antique tools and for anything Union has spilled over into an all new to the market approach to tool making. Utilizing the old world style of machining and finishing essentially makes the new Union products a throwback to the past. The new Union products are made exclusively on manual mills and lathes, while still holding industry standard tolerances on each part. The biggest benefit of making tools the old way is the surface finishes and final look are that of an antique tool minus patina. When you receive a new Union tool it will be an experience like no other, almost as if you were at a hardware store in 1920 buying a new plane.
Another very important part of our mission is to make these old tools better through engineering solutions. The modern world affords us many new materials that were not available in the early 1900’s. If they had been, we are more than sure those materials would have been utilized due to their superiority to the then available materials.
There are many choices in the market today. Most of which are exceptional. We are not here to replace those options, we are here to add another choice. We feel as far as form, function and value our products will far exceed your expectations. Rest assured your newest Union tool was designed, engineered and made with you in mind. Union was brought back to life and is now run by a traditional woodworker and hand plane historian/ collector. So the focus isn’t strictly on sales and profit margins. If Robert Porter wouldn’t own it and use it to make furniture we won’t make it. Robert comes from the woodworking field and has been woodworking with hand and power tools since childhood. Union doesn’t employ salesmen. Union only employs dedicated plane enthusiasts and life long makers. When you go to a woodworking meet or tool show you are surrounded by the very same people that are making decisions at Union.
Union Manufacturing Company is to put it simply “A Union of makers, collectors and hand tool traditionalist”. We are here to make woodworking more enjoyable, not to sell you something you don’t need.
