The X Plane No. 4 1/4 is a 9 inch long smoothing plane, with a 2” cutter, an adjustable mouth and cast grey iron body. The design was originally patented in 1903 and 1904, and has now been upgraded and refined. Learn why Union has resurrected the ultimate smoothing plane. Extra Fine Depth Adjust
The 40 tpi depth adjustment screw, almost twice as fine as a standard plane adjuster, allows you to sneak up on the perfect depth of cut for the task at hand. The dual locking nuts allow the plane iron to be removed and replaced for sharpening without losing your previous setup. Save time and frustration with the X-Plane™.
Integrated Frog
Eliminating hand plane chatter is a matter of controlling and managing vibration. The X-Plane™'s frog is part of the main casting. There is no possibility of a poorly seated or misaligned frog. Say goodbye to chatter.'
 
 
 
Micro Adjustable Mouth
With a fixed frog how do you adjust the mouth for heavy or fine work? By adjusting the mouth! The only bevel down plane on the market with an adjustable mouth. In true union style, the mouth adjustment is micro adjustable with a 32tpi screw. No more trying to awkwardly reach frog screws around the tote. Just easy, straightforward, mouth adjustment.
 
Classic Mahogany
Just like the original X-Plane, the modern 4 1/4 comes with solid Mahogany toes and knobs. A timeless wood with unparalled comfort in the hand.
 
Micro Adjust Screw Cap
The screw cap on a Union X-Plane™ does not just hold the iron in place. Small adjustments in the pressure of the screw allow micro adjustment of the depth of cut of the iron in a way other smoothing planes cannot compete with.

 
Union Thick Irons
An extra layer of defence against chatter. Union Irons are .116 thick, roughly 50% thicker than classic plane irons. The thicker the iron, the harder it is to vibrate, the smoother the cut. Union Irons are class O2 tool steel. Quick to sharpen to a razor keen edge.
